Hear our voices: A message from MyVoice student researchers Carson Downer & Alyssa Tisch
As University of Michigan students and researchers, we’re excited to represent MyVoice. We’ve both shared the unique privilege and awesome responsibility to communicate what our peers have to say about many issues that affect them (and us) as young people.
Through MyVoice, we’ve been able to collaborate with subject experts, present our own work at conferences, learn how to analyze data that youth provide us through surveys, and talk with policy makers about what our peers have to say.
By serving as bridges between youth and adults, we feel we’ve made an impact that can change policy. We are thankful for that opportunity. We’ve gained an appreciation for how powerful and insightful young voices can be, especially when it comes to influencing policy and social change.
Young people are the future architects of our communities, yet their voices are often excluded from decision-making processes. Decision-makers often say they want to create a better world for future generations, but don’t actively engage youth in the decision-making process. MyVoice ensures that youth are not only heard but that they are also part of the research process. This is vital, especially since young people often express themselves differently than adults.
Helping to interpret and amplify youth voices has been incredibly meaningful and rewarding to both of us. We also consider it a privilege to work with MyVoice Director Dr. Tammy Chang, MD, MPH, MS, and Program Manager Marika Waselewski, MPH, who have both been outstanding mentors to us. They have guided us through this learning experience and have helped us achieve award-winning work.
We thank the young people who we call the “MyVoicers.” We’re proud to be two among many young people involved in MyVoice who not only give voice to our peers, but have, in turn, found our own strong individual voices. We look forward to the future as we continue to elevate the valuable perspectives of our peers and our own voices as youth advocates.
With gratitude,
Alyssa Tisch (U-M Class of 2027) & Carson Downer (U-M Class of 2027)

MyVoice: Real Voices, Real Impact:
A message from MyVoice Director
Dr. Tammy Chang
Hello, friends!
Now, more than ever, we believe that understanding the lived experiences and perspectives of youth is critical. The MyVoice Nationwide Poll of Youth gives voice to young people ages 14-24 on issues that impact their lives. Not only do MyVoicers help us understand the world from their eyes, so do the young people who help us gather, analyze, interpret and disseminate findings on what young people in this country have to say.
Our collaboration continues to have a major impact. One prime example, among many: MyVoice research published on youth perceptions of self-testing for sexually transmitted diseases has taken center stage in the New York Times.
Amid uncertain times, youth are finding ways to adapt to many challenges, such as impacts on sexual and reproductive health practices; natural disaster preparedness; the path to financial independence; and AI’s influence on their healthcare.
I would like to send a personal thank you to all the young people who are part of the MyVoice research team and to those youth across the country who share their opinions and concerns with us. In this annual report, we share many critical insights on the topics we’ve posed to youth over the last year — insights we hope will inform and shape policies and practices that impact youth in America.
Thank you again to the amazing young people who are part of our team and poll. We are honored and grateful for you and all you do.
Onwards!
Tammy Chang, MD, MPH, MS

Abby Frank
Working with MyVoice has fuelled my desire to get a Masters in Public Health so I can better serve youth in my community when I am a physician.

Mahesh Gupta
One of my favorite things about MyVoice is that everyone steps into the role of a project leader at some point. We are lucky to learn what it takes to be an effective leader and team member while learning from impressive role models.

Hannah Hua
Valuable skills I learned working at MyVoice have been quantitative analysis and manuscript writing. I found it interesting to be able to connect survey responses to overarching ideas.

Keri Geter
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve taken from MyVoice is that there is something to learn from everyone. Regardless of background, race, gender, or religion, everyone has a voice worth listening to, and being open to these perspectives is how growth happens.

Arianne Hunter
During my experience at MyVoice, I learned the valuable skill of expressing my opinions and ideas collaboratively. The supportive and uplifting environment has given me the opportunity to work with others and appreciate their different perspectives.
